Interior Design Ideas for the Holidays

FH00006 Whether you celebrate Christmas, Chanukah, Yule or Kwanza the holiday season is a perfect time to decorate your home with those perfect little touches that transform your house to a home. For many families, saving money is a priority, so these are some interior design ideas specifically designed for the holiday season that won’t break your budget.

Adding color is one of the easiest ways to dress up a home. Renters are often stuck with drab, neutral colors on the walls, but there’s no reason that you can’t add color everywhere else. One great way to dress up a wall would be with a colorful wall hanging. You can find hangings that are inexpensive yet beautiful. Interior design ideas for wall hangings include hanging them over entertainment centers, in place of framed pictures or anywhere else that could use a little touch of color. Be very careful not to hang anything flammable near a fireplace or any other source of heat. Each type of celebration has it’s own color scheme. Christmas is traditionally red and green, Kwanza is red, black and green and Chanukah is blue and white. Make sure to keep these colors in mind while doing your decorations.

One of the most simple and inexpensive holiday interior design ideas is to use candles. Menorahs and Kinaras are candle holders specifically designed for Chanukah and Kwanza, respectively. For those that celebrate Christmas, candles can be used in any room to give it a warmer feel. Many years ago, candles were placed on windowsills, but I wouldn’t suggest that you use real candles now. There are electric candles available that are far safer to use. You can purchase candles at most any discount store cheaply. Again, you will need to be extra careful with lit candles, but they make a room feel cozy and add a homey feel. Be sure to never leave a lit candle unattended.

Making you own decorations is another great way to save money during the holiday season. Using things that you probably already have lying around the house such as ribbons or extra fabric. The main thing is to be creative with your interior design ideas. Ribbons could be used as garland on a Christmas tree or even a doorway. With some pinecones collected from the ground with a quick coat of spray paint that matches your color scheme can serve as a centerpiece for your table or decorations for the tree.

When most people think of interior design ideas for the holiday season, it is hard to imagine making your home beautiful without spending a lot of money. All it takes is some creativity and your home can be a winter wonderland without draining your bank account. Your guests will be impressed whether or not they know you made it yourself. Just because something is homemade doesn’t mean it looks cheap. As a matter of fact, it is just the opposite. Not only will your home be nicely decorated, but you can be proud of yourself for a job well done.
