 TOP GRAIN vs. FULL GRAIN

 “Top Grain” leather is the top ¾ of a hide.  Because of its strength and beauty, this supple layer is the standard of upholstery leather. Occasionally, top grain leathers are buffed or sanded to remove excess markings.  This process also removes the beautiful natural graining found in leather. On the other hand, “full grain” leather is a top grain hide, which has not been buffed or sanded.  The grain and natural markings, which many consider the hallmarks of leather, remain. Because it is the most beautiful and sensuous of all top grain leathers, “full grain” is the premier grade for consumers.

 CATTLE LEAD AN UNSHELTERED LIFE

 Cattle encounter a variety of nature’s elements in their search for food.  Grazing often brings the animals in contact with the trees, bushes, and barbed wire fences, which can leave scratches and scars on the hide.

Neck Wrinkles: So that the steer will have flexibility needed to move its head while grazing, the skin located on its neck is full and loose.  As the neck stretches and contracts, wrinkles naturally occur in the hide.

 

 

 

 

 

Scars: These scar marks are evidence of this cow’s unsheltered life. The fewer marks of this kind on the hide, the more expensive the leather is.

 

 

 

 

Backbone: These natural furrows appear along the backbone of all hides, Again due to the animal’s physiology, they are your proof of a natural full grain hide. 

 

 

 

 

 

Stretch Marks: Stretch marks appear in cowhide for the same reasons they do in humans. The process of calving requires the stretching of the skin to accommodate the new calf. Nothing could be more natural.
